Transgender Services Team Member

Position Description

Transgender Services Team members have the following responsibilities:

  • SPECTRUM Transgender Support Group Facilitation. Guide and moderate drop-in support meetings held at Spectrum from 7-9PM the first and third Thursday of every month from. These meetings provide a safe and respectful environment for community members to share time with peers, develop a sense of community, seek guidance, build confidence, have general discussions, observe and learn. Facilitators work in pairs to help each other learn, grow and support handling meeting challenges. Facilitators need to be trans-identified, and have facilitation skills or be willing to learn them.
  • Email Services. Review and respond to email requests received through SPECTRUM’s Transgender Support email account. This service helps the requester navigate problems and available resources. This service also aids the team understand the needs of the community, provide better support, offer information on programs, services and providers in the area and introduce them to the website and the SPECTRUM Transgender Support Group meetings. Analyzing the ongoing dialog the team can improve services and create standard responses to common requests thus providing quicker and more consistent responses.
  • Content Research, Development and Management. Research, gather, synthesize and create information packages for to the Transgender community. The packages are used for the website, email responses, SPECTRUM Transgender Support Group discussions and printed and electronic handouts. Skills useful in this area are an ability to research, analyze, write, edit, summarize and post articles and links to a website, to a content management system and for electronic and printed stand-alone documents.
  • Other Ad Hoc Responsibilities. From time to time we require team members to assist local services and agencies when they request participation in projects or events.

Impact Statement

As a volunteer in our Transgender Services Team, you will participate in the provision and evolution of programs and services offered to the transgender community within the Kitchener-Waterloo region.  You will gain the satisfaction that comes from helping other transgender-identified individuals handle their unique challenges and improve their quality of life.

Time Commitment

Facilitators of the SPECTRUM Transgender Support Group are asked to commit to the twice monthly group meetings: 7 – 9 PM on the 1st and 3rd Thursday evening of the month.  The time commitment for volunteers for our other services is typically around 6 hours a month, however, you are welcome to offer more time if you wish.

The only thing we ask is that you commit to the Team for at least 6 months.

Training Details

Volunteers will learn procedures by working with experienced members of our Transgender Services Team.

Please note!

You must be of Age of Majority (18 years old) in Ontario to volunteer. If you are below the age of majority, you may require express written consent of a legal guardian to volunteer with SPECTRUM. If you are seeking to fulfill secondary education volunteer work requirements, documentation must be provided before eligible work hours are performed.

For certain volunteer roles, such as fundraising or reception, a Police Check may be required.
