What We Are – We are a social and discussion group for older LGBTQ-identified adults.
How We Began – In October of 2013, SPECTRUM established the Aging with Pride Committee (AwP) to highlight and tackle systemic barriers that the LGBTQ+ aging population face. AwP began by delivering LGBTQ cultural-awareness training sessions in senior-serving institutions like community centres with a significant senior population, retirement homes, home-care services, long-term-care facilities and hospices.
But AwP also identified the need for a group to help reduce isolation among older adults in the local LGBTQ community, and to create a supportive community for ourselves as we age. After discussions with local community members we started up the Older Adults Group in July of 2016.
In the early days of our Group, we heard participants say things like how wonderful it was that this group was starting up, because we want to feel part of a community, rather than sitting at home as we grow older.
What We Hope to Do – We have been functioning as a social and support group – a place where we can make some friends and also where we can speak about matters that concern us as we age. We are also interested in organizing social outings, inviting speakers on topics of interest to us, having friendly visits to people unable to leave their residence and inter-generational gatherings where we might tell younger folks our stories and hear theirs as well.
