A new website (ourspectrum.com) was also constructed.

New Location, 2015, May 15 (Friday)

Around 2014, December we learned that we could no longer count on being able to book the large front room at 42 Erb St E for our programming.  Given that our 12’x12′ office was to too small for running our programs, we began the search for a new home.  We received a reprieve for January and February.  We entered into talks with the Downtown Community Centre in Kitchener.  On 2015, February 24, they generously offered us free room rentals beginning in April for most of our programming during our transition to a new home.  We had some help from the Bread & Roses Housing Coop for March.  Finally we moved into our new home on 2015, May 15 and over the summer began transferring most of our programming to the new location at Unit 210, 283 Duke St W, Kitchener.  Here is a photo gallery of our first few months in Unit 210 at 283 Duke St W, Kitchener.

Incorporation: 2016, May 13 (Friday)

On 2016, March 1, we had three years of financial data, and were then in a position to apply for charitable status with the Government of Ontario.  Today, we received our 2016-05-13 Supplementary Letters Patent from the Government of Ontario as a not-for-profit corporation with charitable status.  The revision represented the first step in working toward charitable status.  The second step involves getting approval from the Canada Revenue Agency, so that we can issue tax receipts for donations.

2017 Open House: May 31 (Sunday)

We had a very successful Open House on 2017, May 31.  At this event, we announced the receipt of a $25,000.00 federal grant under the New Horizons for Seniors Program to SPECTRUM’s Aging with Pride Committee for our “Beyond the Rainbow” project to do outreach to LGBTQ adults in senior-serving institutions, like retirement homes, nursing homes, and community centres.

The formal announcement was made by Raj Saini (MP for SPECTRUM’s riding, Kitchener Centre).  This was followed by speeches by Jim Parrott (for Aging with Pride), Marwan Tabbara (MP for Kitchener South-Hespeler.) and Berry Vrbanovic (Mayor of Kitchener).  Also in attendance were Bardish Chaggar (MP for Waterloo), Catherine Fife (MPP for Kitchener-Waterloo), and Dave Jaworsky (Mayor of Waterloo).  This was followed by a poetry performance by Beth Murch and a musical performance by Sonja Malton.

Here is a photo gallery of the event.

2017 Charitable Status for SPECTRUM: December 21 (Thursday)

On 2016, May 13 the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee of Ontario gave us Supplementary Letters Patent granting us the status of an Ontario charitable not-for-profit corporation.  This meant that we were free to proceed to apply for charitable status from the federal government.  Due to the pressure of other responsibilities, we were not in a position to complete our application for charitable status to the Canada Revenue Agency until 2017, July 6.

On 2017, December 21, after a conversation with an officer at the Charities Directorate of the Canada Revenue Agency, the Executive Director of SPECTRUM was informed that SPECTRUM would be receiving charitable status.  On 2018, January 30, we received formal confirmation of this in the following CRA Letter Announcing Charitable Status for SPECTRUM.   On the verso of this letter is our charitable registration number 85096 0576 RR0001 and also the information that SPECTRUM’s charitable status was back-dated to 2017, August 1.

2017 Seasonal Celebration of Community: December 25 (Monday)

Here is a photo of us setting up for our Seasonal Celebration of Community.  We had 18 folks attend from noon to 10 PM – fewer than the previous year, because of the winter storm this year.
