SPECTRUM’s Positive Spaces Campaign
You are not expected to be an “expert” on rainbow community issues. SPECTRUM can help you become better prepared to create inclusive spaces. Together, we can combat homophobia everywhere.
What’s a Positive Space?
Positive Spaces are welcoming environments where Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Pansexual, Genderqueer, etc. (LGBTQ+) are able to access inclusive services with dignity and respect, and where service providers can work free from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
Everyone can work to create Positive Spaces by challenging homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, heterosexism, and cissexism.
The strength of Positive Spaces is in creating an environment which strives to understand the overlapping and intersecting nature of our communities.
How to create your Positive Space?
A Workshop Session
No one is an instant expert at Positive Spaces. Attend or host a session, sponsored by SPECTRUM, where you, your staff or cohorts, spend some time learning about making a positive space. Afterwhich you will receive a letter and a rainbow sticker/window decal.
posting a sticker in a visible location, preferably at the entrance to your space. Posting a Positive Space sticker informs others that you are respectful of, and knowledgeable about, sexual and gender diversity.
Creating a Positive Space is a signal to everyone that your space is a space for everyone… uncompromisingly inclusive and welcoming
