Donations:

  • Financial donations and donations of books, magazine subscriptions, DVDs, CDs and other resources of interest to the Queer community are most welcome!!
In 2011, as Generation X Video & Media in Waterloo was closing down operations and selling off its inventory, Thom Ryan, working on behalf of the tri-Pride Community Association, acquired a collection of 129 titles considered to be of likely interest to the local LGBTQ community.

At the time of purchase, the inventory had already been picked over, so the collection did not contain many titles that might be considered mainstream. It was instead a rich collection composed primarily of art-house films, many of them lesser-known and hard to find. After the material had been acquired it was stored until such time as a suitable physical home might be found for it.

In April of 2013, the tri-Pride Community Association generously donated the collection of 129 DVDs to SPECTRUM as a foundation for establishing a comprehensive collection of LGBTQ-themed films for the local community. The collection was then catalogued, a loan policy was developed, the DVD cases were put on display (with the DVDs themselves stored securely), and the collection was made available for loan.

With the passage of time, the collection has grown through donations-in-kind from individuals in the community. As a consequence the collection now contains a growing number of better-known films, as well as the lesser-known films that formed the original basis for the collection.

9 Dead Gay Guys

“Offensively funny, politically incorrect and in-your-face, 9 Dead Gay Guys tells the story of Kenny and Byron, two Irish lads who move to London to hit the big time.  But what they end up doing is hustling for beer money at the local gay pub.  Not that these two wholesome boys are gay, but what’s a little sex between strangers?  Well, maybe they are gay — or at least maybe Kenny is gay… he thinks.  All of this is irrelevant; as “the Queen” is dead and there is some serious cash for the winner of the “Really Hard Red Bull Test” (involving two stacked cans and one real big appendage).  Before this wild ride ends, there are eight more dead locals in this raucous, fast-paced and whacked-out British import.”

Gay Republicans

Documentary, Gay | 2004 | 63 min. | English

“After years of relative obscurity, Log Cabin — the gay Republican club formed in California in 1977 — has found itself in the National spotlight.  George Bush’s unequivocal opposition to gay marriage put them at the forefront of one of the most hotly contested elections in years.  With the issue of whether or not to support the president distilling into a stark choice between their civil rights and their loyalty to the party, 2004 forced the Gay Republicans to a crude decision: what was more important, being gay or being Republican?  This documentary, an extended version of the film that originally aired on Trio TV, follows a handful of Log Cabin members on their different paths to “Decision 2004.”  A sterotype-shattering, gut-wrenching portrait of an organization in turmoil that is incisive, moving, humorous, and disturbing.”

That Man: Peter Berlin

Documentary, Biography, Gay | 2005 | 81 min. | English

“With his trademark Dutchboy haircut and oh-so-tight trousers, Peter Berlin was the gay poster boy for the hedonistic and sexually liberated 1970s.  Jim Tushinski’s fascinating documentary traces Berlin’s story from his childhood in wartime Germany to his current life in San Francisco.  A talented artist, photographer, and filmmakers, Peter Berlin was his own biggest creation, a carefully constructed, unattainable icon awash in eroticism.  Berlin’s fans and friends, including John Waters, Armistead Maupin, Jack Wrangler, and Wakefield Poole offer their comments and stories, but Berlin himself, still looking remarkably boyish in his early 60s, provides the most illuminating commentary.  Co-produced by Lawrence Helman and packed with an astonishing archive of photos and film clips, many never before seen, That Man: Peter Berlin is an entertaining and revelatory look at the man behind the famous image.”

Times of Harvey Milk, The [2 discs]

Biography, Documentary, History, Gay | 1984 | 90 min. | English

“A true twentieth-century trailblazer, Harvey Milk was an outspoken human rights activist and one of the first openly gay U.S. politicians elected to public office; even after his assassination in 1978, he continues to inspire disenfranchised people around the world.  The Oscar-winning ‘The Times of Harvey Milk’, directed by Robert Epstein and produced by Richard Schmiechen, was as ground-breaking as its subject.  One of the first feature documentaries to address gay life in America, it’s a work of advocacy itself, bringing Milk’s message of hope and equality to a wider audience.”
