The Cambridge Municipal Election is happening on October 26, 2026.
This election, we have sent an e-mail to all local candidates* with a single question to answer. The question was dependent on the role they are a candidate for. The roles we have sent questions to include: Mayor, Regional Councilor, and School Board Trustee (for WRDSB and WCDSB).
Mayor
All mayoral candidates were asked:

To the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, I want you to know that your safety, dignity, and voice matter.
If elected, I will make it a priority to listen directly to your community and work with local organizations to identify what City Hall can do better. That includes supporting inclusive community initiatives, ensuring City services are welcoming and respectful, and taking concerns about discrimination and safety seriously.
You should never feel like you have to fight to be heard by your own city. My door will be open, and your voice will have a place at City Hall.

Regional Councilor
All regional councilor candidates were asked:
What will you do, and what policies will you support, as a Regional Councilor to further inclusion and equity for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community?

Supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community has been part of my entire journey as a proud and out gay person. I understand the privilege I've had as a white cis-male settler, and have tried to use the opportunities provided to me to bring our community together, and provide a platform for others. As queer people, we exist in every facet of the community. It's important to me that we consider Queer Voices, as well as the voices of all marginalized people. Every decision made at council should consider everyone who lives here regardless of their abilities, where they were born, how they communicate, who they love, how they identify, or what they believe. My goal is to create safer, more connected communities. This means taking a more ethical and supportive approach to emergency response, increasing shelter access for women and gender-diverse people, and continuing to stand up against harassment, bullying, or bias against 2SLGBTQIA+ and other marginalized communities. Organizations like Spectrum, Thrive, and Camino/OK2BMe are already doing great work in the community, and I know funding and support can be limited. My goal is to help embolden the work already being done so we can build a Waterloo Region where everyone is safe and welcome.
I have and will support a Region where every resident is treated with dignity, respect and safety. This is regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.
As a Regional Councilor, I have and will continue to support fair access to Regional services. This includes everything from housing , public health, transit and employment. That means ensuring services are welcoming and practical for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.
In conclusion, I will also support strong anti-discrimination policies, safe and respectful workplaces. Inclusion is not about slogans. It is about making sure every person in Waterloo Region can live safely, participate fully and be treated fairly.
